Rules for dogs
- Keep your dog on a leash no longer than six feet. (Deccan Herald, 18 Dec 2021)
- Bring a scoop or bags, pick up the poop and put it in a bin. (Deccan Herald, 18 Dec 2021)
- Show your dog's rabies vaccination certificate if a guard asks. (Deccan Herald, 30 Dec 2021; The News Minute, 18 Dec 2021) Our tip: Keep a photo of it on your phone, and carry the paper certificate too if you can: a guard may ask for the original.
- "Ferocious and larger breed dogs are prohibited." The rule names no breeds. (Deccan Herald, 18 Dec 2021; Deccan Herald, 30 Dec 2021) Our tip: In practice the guard at the gate decides, so with a very large or guarding breed, expect questions.
- You are liable for any bite or damage your dog causes. (Deccan Herald, 18 Dec 2021)
The Sunday dog area
On Sunday mornings dogs meet in a fenced area in front of the State Central Library, the red building inside the park. It is run by volunteers, the Cubbon Park Canines with the CJ Memorial Trust, working with the Horticulture Department, and its rules are posted at the entrance. It was reported as 8 to 11 am in 2017; the trust described it as still running every Sunday in 2025. Times may have changed, so check before you go. (Deccan Chronicle, 10 May 2017; CJ Memorial Trust, May 2025)
Why there are no dog timings
The Horticulture Department, which runs the park, set these rules in December 2021 after the Karnataka High Court asked why dogs were allowed in. They set no dog hours. In June 2022 the department planned to stop dogs entirely; the ban was put on hold after a public outcry, including from the area's MP. (Deccan Herald, 18 Dec 2021; Deccan Herald, 29 Jun 2022)
The state's Animal Husbandry department then told the park to allow dogs, citing the Animal Welfare Board's guidelines. Its letter said the park could add rules such as short leashes and set hours for dogs. We found no newer dog rule up to October 2026. (Deccan Herald, 1 Jul 2022)
When to go
The roads inside the park have been closed to vehicles on Sundays since 2015, so a Sunday walk has no traffic. They still were in January 2025, when the state opened them for a few evening hours on two Saturdays a month. (Deccan Herald, 25 May 2015; The News Minute, 29 Jan 2025)
Where it is
Central Bangalore. The Sunday dog area is beside the State Central Library, near the middle of the park. Open in Google Maps (a rough pin, not the gate).
