You don’t have to leave the dog behind for a weekend away. There are farmstays an hour out of Bangalore and coffee-estate homestays in Coorg, Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur that take dogs. Pet fees run from nothing to about ₹2,000 a night. Every stay below said it takes dogs on its own site or listing in October 2026. Rules change, so tell them you’re bringing a dog when you book, and ask again a week before.
Under two hours
Virama Farm Stay, Magadi. About 45 km out, roughly an hour on Mysore Road or Magadi Road. It takes any breed and any size, for ₹1,000 a dog (their pet page). Dogs stay out of the pool and off the beds. Their page has prices for couples and for booking the whole place, which suits a group of friends with dogs.
Amarakosha, Nandi Hills. Close enough for a Saturday night. ₹999 a dog a night, dogs allowed in the common areas, and the resort talks up a “pet-friendly Jacuzzi”.
Villas around Hosur, Anekal and Chikkaballapur. StayVista lists ten villas within about one to two and a half hours of the city that take dogs indoors (their July 2026 list). Most charge a one-time cleaning fee of ₹500 to ₹1,500 a dog and take up to two dogs. Good when you want a private garden and no other guests’ dogs.
Coorg, Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur
These are four to six hours away. Leave early and do the drive in two halves.
Clover Holiday Village, Coorg. About 232 km, four and a half hours on NH275, near Shanivarasanthe. Up to two dogs a cottage, a rabies vaccination certificate is a must, leash in common areas, and no dogs in the main pool. The homepage says no pet fee but their own guide mentions one, so ask which applies.
View Point Homestay, Madikeri. On Stuart Hill in Madikeri town, with room for two pets in total (Vrbo listing). A good base if you want to be near the town.
Mugilu Homestay, Sakleshpur. On an estate about 15 km from Sakleshpur town, about five hours from Bangalore, for couples and families. The house rules are clear: bring your dog’s bedding, never leave the dog alone in the room, clean up after it, and no feeding in the dining area. Their own dogs roam free, so it’s best for a dog that’s easy with other dogs. Their site gives two answers on the pet fee (₹300 or nothing), so ask.
Astagiri Homestay, Chikmagalur. Inside a coffee estate near Mudigere, five to six hours out. It says it’s pet friendly but publishes no fee or rules, so ask before you book.
Kabini and Wayanad
Red Earth Kabini. On the Kabini backwaters near the Nagarhole safari gates. It takes dogs if you tell them in advance, and has five resident dogs of its own.
Sterling Wayanad, Sulthan Bathery. For dogs up to 30 kg, one a room, ₹2,000 plus tax a night. Pet rooms are few, so call after you book. Bring the latest vaccination record. Dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant or other shared areas, so plan meals in your room or outside.
Where your dog can’t come
- Safaris and forest camps. Jungle Lodges and Resorts, which runs the state’s lodges at Kabini, Bandipur and BRT, says pets aren’t allowed in its camps (Jungle Lodges). If you want a safari, stay somewhere outside the forest that takes dogs, and leave the dog with someone you trust for those few hours.
- Forest treks. In May 2026 Karnataka suspended trekking in forests with wildlife “till further orders”. Check whether that’s still in force before you plan a hike.
- Nandi Hills. We couldn’t find a written rule on dogs at the top. Ask at the gate, and keep the dog on a leash among the crowds.
The drive
- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a quick tea stop. The inside heats up fast, even in the shade with the windows open. See heatstroke in dogs.
- Plan your breaks for water and a short walk on a lead, and keep your dog secured in the car while you drive, as Bangalore’s Voice of Stray Dogs advises.
- Going by bus? KSRTC takes dogs on its ordinary city, suburban and mofussil buses, not on AC buses or premium ones like Rajahamsa and Karnataka Vaibhav. The dog pays a fare, so ask the conductor.
What to pack
- A photo of your dog’s vaccination record on your phone. Several of these stays ask for it at check-in.
- Your dog’s own bed or blanket. Some homestays ask you to bring one, and keep dogs off their beds.
- Tick prevention, started before you go. Long grass is where dogs pick up ticks, and estates have plenty of it. Check your dog every evening and take ticks off the right way (how to remove a tick). If your dog seems off in the weeks after the trip, read tick fever.
- Food, bowls, poop bags, a long lead for walks, and a towel for muddy paws in the monsoon.
