The short answers

  • Is there a dog park in Pune? The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) approved its first, in Kharadi, in August 2025; we found no report that it has opened. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) opened one in Pimple Saudagar in early 2024, but we couldn’t confirm it’s still open.
  • Are dogs allowed in PMC gardens? Check each one. Of the 25 gardens on the PMC’s website, one says no pets (Shahid Major Pradeep Tathawade Garden, Karve Nagar); the rest don’t say.
  • Can I walk my dog on Taljai, Vetal Tekdi or the NIBM hill? Not in the forest areas. In December 2020 forest officials said dogs are banned there and that people who bring them would be fined.
  • Do I need a licence for my dog? Yes, in both PMC and PCMC limits.
  • Is there a private off-leash park? Pune Pet Park, on the Lohegaon-Wagholi side, is for members, but dogs that aren’t members can book its off-leash swimming pool.

Dog parks run by the city

Pimple Saudagar dog park (PCMC)

The PCMC opened Pimpri-Chinchwad’s first dog park at Govind Chowk in Pimple Saudagar in early 2024. Its commissioner said it was built on an old construction waste dump near Linear Park (Free Press Journal, 2 Mar 2024). What the first reports described:

  • Separate areas for large and small dogs, on-leash and off-leash sections, and space for more assertive dogs (Punekar News, 30 Jan 2024).
  • A trainer for four hours a day, water points, toilets for people and a canteen (Pune Pulse, 15 Feb 2024). The Free Press Journal also listed a vet, a supervisor and a sanitary inspector among the staff.
  • Open 6 to 10 am and 5 to 9 pm. An entry fee of ₹20 for one person and one dog was planned but still waiting for approval (Pune Pulse, 2 Mar 2024).

Two days later the PCMC said it planned to outsource the upkeep of the park’s facilities (Pune Pulse, 4 Mar 2024). That is the latest report we found. We couldn’t confirm it’s still open, who runs it now, or whether the fee was brought in, so call the PCMC before you make the trip.

Kharadi dog park (PMC, planned)

The PMC first announced a dog park in March 2023, but its first site, next to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj, was turned down by the Central Zoo Authority, whose rules keep pets out of zoo premises (Pune Pulse, 6 Jun 2025). A second site, in Baner, went to another civic department, and in August 2025 the PMC’s veterinary department approved a 3-acre plot in Kharadi, at survey numbers 25 and 26 (Pune Pulse, 4 Aug 2025).

What the reports say is planned:

  • Fenced play areas, shade, drinking water and waste bins first. A jogging track, a swimming pool, grooming, parking and vet care later, in phases (Pune Pulse, Aug 2025).
  • Walking tracks and play areas free to use; some extras, such as a dog pool, may carry a small charge (Pune Pulse, Jun 2025).
  • All dogs vaccinated, dewormed and on a leash inside the park (Pune Pulse, Jun 2025).

We found no report that it has opened, up to October 2026, so treat all of this as a plan.

PMC gardens: check each one

The PMC’s website describes 25 of its gardens, with timings and what’s inside (PMC gardens list). Only one of those pages says anything about pets. At Shahid Major Pradeep Tathawade Garden in Karve Nagar, “pet animals are not allowed into it” (PMC). The pages for Saras Baug, the Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden, Nana-Nani Park and the rest don’t say either way.

So read the board at each gate. If a guard says no, don’t argue: take it up with the ward office instead.

Hills and forests: dogs are not allowed

  • Taljai: “Pet and stray dogs are not allowed in the reserved forest area as per the rules,” the forest department’s Deputy Conservator for Pachgaon Parvati said in December 2020. He said boards there say so, and that action would be taken against people who ignore them. An environmentalist in the same report said dogs there sometimes attack peacocks and rabbits (Deccan Express, 14 Dec 2020, archived copy).
  • NIBM hill: the same month, the Pune Forest Department announced a strict curb on pets there. The district forest officer said dogs are “completely banned from the forests areas”, and that people who bring them would be fined and have cases lodged against them. A police officer had been bitten by an unchained dog inside the NIBM forest (The Bridge Chronicle, 21 Dec 2020).
  • Vetal Tekdi: the same report says the forest department had earlier taken “stringent action” against people who visited with their pets.

We found nothing newer on dogs on these hills, and no source on dogs at Parvati. If you know what the board says at a Pune garden or hill we haven’t covered, tell us and we’ll add it.

Society and neighbourhood parks

We found no single PMC or PCMC rule for dogs in small neighbourhood parks; a society’s park is run by its residents’ association. The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), the statutory board under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, tells housing societies that “seeking to ban pets from gardens or parks, is short-sighted” and suggests agreeing dog timings instead; they can’t keep pets out of lifts either (AWBI guidelines, 26 Feb 2015). For public parks, in a 2016 letter to Delhi’s parks authority, the Board said leashed dogs walked by adults “will not therefore be banned”, and that parks can set reasonable dog hours instead (AWBI, 15 Nov 2016).

Cleaning up is what keeps parks open to dogs. In 2022 the PMC said it kept getting complaints about dogs fouling roads, footpaths and parks (Punekar News, 15 Nov 2022).

Licence and clean-up rules

  • PMC: the PMC has made registration and a licence compulsory for dogs, and fines ₹500 if a dog fouls a public road or footpath (Punekar News, Nov 2022). Dog and cat licences can be applied for online (PMC Veterinary Department).
  • PCMC: a dog licence is needed under government rules, and it has to be renewed every year. You must carry it and show it when asked, you must not let your dog loose in public places or on the streets, and you can be fined up to ₹500 if your dog causes a nuisance (Pune Pulse, 5 Aug 2022).

Private dog parks

Pune Pet Park, Lohegaon-Wagholi: a private pet resort of 37,000 sq ft with a large play area, an agility area and a 2,000 sq ft dog pool. Its site says “Entry is restricted to Members only” and asks you to call before visiting, and that dogs with aggression or anxiety issues are not welcome. Dogs that aren’t members can book boarding and the pool (Pune Pet Park).

The pool is “declared an Off-Leash area”. For dogs that aren’t members, its page listed ₹1,000 per dog for a 2-hour slot, ₹500 for each extra dog from the same family, ₹300 for each person who goes into the pool and a one-time ₹500 registration fee, when we checked in October 2026. Book first: there are no walk-ins, and the pool is shut on Thursdays. Dogs with ticks, cuts or skin infections can’t swim, and a female in heat may be kept out. In summer the park advises skipping the 12.30 and 2.45 pm slots because of the risk of heatstroke (Pune Dog Squad, Pune Pet Park’s dog section). Prices change, so call before you go.

We found no other private dog park in Pune with its own website.

What to carry

  • A leash. The PCMC’s rules say not to let your dog loose in public places, and the Kharadi plan has dogs on a leash inside the park too.
  • Poop bags. The PMC fines ₹500 for a dog fouling a road or footpath.
  • Your dog’s licence and rabies vaccination record. In PCMC limits, the rule is to carry the licence and show it when asked.
  • Water and a bowl. On hot days, walk in the cooler hours and know the signs of heatstroke in dogs.

Puppies: wait until your vet says your puppy’s vaccinations protect it before taking it to busy parks, see when puppies can go to the park. Ticks: check your dog after walks through grass, see how to check your dog for ticks. A lost dog: search close by first, then report the lost or found dog on FurFam, which works in any city.

Park manners

Pick up every poop, ask before your dog greets another dog, and keep a female in heat at home. Before your first off-leash visit, read dog park etiquette: the gate, what good play looks like, and how to stop a scuffle.

Dog parks in other cities: Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Kochi.

FAQs

Which parks in Pune are pet friendly? We couldn’t confirm any PMC garden that welcomes dogs: one says no, and the rest don’t say. The only public dog park we found is the PCMC’s in Pimple Saudagar, and we couldn’t confirm it’s still open.

Can I take my dog to Taljai or Vetal Tekdi? Not into the forest areas: forest officials said in December 2020 that dogs are banned there. We found no newer rule.

Do I need a licence for my dog in Pune? Yes. The PMC takes applications online. In PCMC the licence is renewed every year, and you’re meant to carry it and show it when asked.
